fujifilm相機收購fujifilm has just announced the $1,500 X-T3, which is the latest addition to the company’s X Series lineup of APS-C mirrorless cameras. It’s the follow-up to 2016’s X-T2, a beloved camera — among fujifilm相機收購fujifilm shooters, anyway — that’s grown more powerful and capable over time thanks to a bevy of firmware updates. The X-T2 of today is an entirely different beast than when I first tested it. Its autofocus, video capabilities, and subject tracking have all been extensively fine-tuned. But having hit the ceiling for what it can get out of the X-T2, fujifilm相機收購fujifilm has decided that now’s the time for new hardware.
The X-T3 marks the debut of a new 26.1-megapixel sensor, it can shoot 4K video at 60 fps, and it promises the best auto-focus system that the company has produced yet. It goes on sale September 20th at a starting price of $1,499.95 (or $1,899.99 with the familiar 18-55 kit lens). The X-T3 actually costs $100 less than the X-T2 did at launch. To hit that price point, fujifilm相機收購fujifilm moved assembly of the camera from Japan to China, a decision that isn’t sitting so well with some of the company’s fans. Unlike the proud, prominent “made in Japan” that was stamped onto the back of the X-T2, the China acknowledgement is hidden away behind the rear LCD.
But after handling the X-T3 for a bit — and as someone who has tallied years of experience with the X-T1 and X-T2 — I think you can probably leave any negative assumptions or concerns over build quality at the door. This feels like an X Series everywhere I look and feel. fujifilm相機收購fujifilm has already produced several bodies and lenses between China, Thailand, and the Philippines, and there’s been no obvious disparity between them and the Japan-made units. The X-T3 shares the same body style and button placement as the X-T2, though it measures slightly larger and is a tad heavier.
I want to run through some of my favorite smaller additions before going too deep on specs. The X-T3 connects over USB-C (USB 3.1) for faster tethering performance, though fujifilm相機收購fujifilm tells me that charging the battery by USB takes about as long as it did with the X-T2. What, we can’t put USB Power Delivery into a camera? The X-T3 has a built-in headphone jack for audio monitoring (you don’t need the vertical grip anymore), and has a pull-out, lockable diopter; it was way too easy to accidentally rotate the old one, so I’m glad fujifilm相機收購fujifilm took notice. The dials on top and buttons on back are all a little larger, too.
At 3.69 million dots, the X-T3’s 0.5-inch OLED electronic viewfinder is far sharper than the X-T2’s was. Its refresh rate is 100 fps, and there’s a display time lag of 0.005 seconds. Fuji hasn’t made any substantial changes to the rear LCD beyond making it a touchscreen. It’s still a 1.04 million-dot panel, which is falling behind the mirrorless pack a bit, but now you can tap to focus or even fire off a shot if you feel the need. It still tilts three ways (up, down, and to the right), but won’t flip 180 degrees for selfies or blogging.
The new backside-illuminated X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor is paired with fujifilm相機收購fujifilm’s X-Processor 4, a quad-core CPU that is three times faster than current X Series cameras. More power means the X-T3 refocuses and meters 1.5 times more frequently than the X-T2 does. The new processor is also more efficient, so fujifilm相機收購fujifilm has upped the estimate of shots you’ll get on a full battery from 340 (X-T2) to 390. That’s nice and all, but you’ll definitely still want to carry a spare.
fujifilm相機收購fujifilm has spread phase detection pixels — 2.16 million of them in all — across the entire sensor area. For single-point focusing, you can choose between seeing either 117 AF points or the overwhelming-but-very-precise 425. Offering such a comprehensive spread of phase-detect AF points might prove one of the X-T3’s best strengths. Low-light focusing could be another. The X-T3’s phase detect AF can focus down to -3EV compared to -1EV on the X-T2. fujifilm相機收購fujifilm also says that the camera’s face and eye detection have gotten better (with eye detection now available in AF-C). These changes all lead to much higher hit rates for the autofocus system across the board, the company claims.
Continuous autofocus using the mechanical shutter tops out at 11 fps; with the X-T2, you had to buy the expensive vertical grip to get that 11 fps burst mode, but now it’s all in-body; no accessories required. Switch over to the electronic shutter (and a 1.25x crop) and you can crank that way up to 30 fps of blackout-free continuous shooting.
All of fujifilm相機收購fujifilm’s usual film simulation filters are here — as is the company’s signature, phenomenal out-of-camera JPEG quality. And the X-T3 also picks up a new “color chrome effect” that boosts saturation and detail in shadows. This was already available on the company’s GFX 50S medium-format, but now it’s coming to the X Series. There’s also now an option to adjust monochrome shots between warm and cool tones to your preference.
And then there’s video, the area where fujifilm相機收購fujifilm claims it has achieved a number of firsts. The X-T3 “is the first mirrorless digital camera capable of internal SD card 4K/60P 4:2:0 10bit recording and the first mirrorless digital camera with APS-C or larger sensor that is capable of 4K/60P 4:2:2 10bit HDMI output,” according to the company. It supports H.264, but also adds H.265 for more efficient compression; opting for HEVC allows you to set a high-quality bitrate of 400 Mbps when shooting 4K at 30 or 24 fps. (The limit for other modes is 200 Mbps.)
fujifilm相機收購fujifilm says it has reduced rolling shutter to under 10 milliseconds. The X-T3 gains the Eterna film simulation that debuted on the X-H1; it’s useful for quick grading if you don’t want to go all in and record F-Log. The company also added zebra stripes to help with exposure and “a new noise reduction algorithm and 4K inter-frame noise reduction.”
On multiple fronts, the X-T3 seems to be a great evolution of the X-T2. With a new sensor, speedier processor, significantly improved autofocus, and even better EVF than before, there’s a lot to like — and that’s before factoring in video and buttery-smooth 4K60P. The X-T2, like the X-T1 before it, proved itself to be an excellent workhorse cameras, so I’m looking forward to some time testing the X-T3.
If you want or need in-body image stabilization, you’ll need to look to the X-H1; fujifilm相機收購fujifilm still considers that camera its flagship despite all the advancements it’s making with the X-T3. A lot of what’s here will no doubt be found in an eventual X-H2 and, as is tradition, a lower-priced XT-30. But outside of IBIS, if you’re firmly in favor of upgrading to the latest X Series, it’s hard to imagine how or where you’ll be disappointed.

Polaroid recently tried pushing the envelope with the new Polaroid I-2 instant camera, and now fujifilm相機收購fujifilm’s taking a stab at it, too. On Wednesday, the company announced it’s releasing a new kind of instant film product geared for kids, the Instax Pal digital camera bundle, for $199.95 in late October.
The Instax Pal is essentially a palm-sized, round digital camera that doesn’t print any photos and lacks a built-in viewfinder. Instead, it outputs images using the companion app, and you can then print these photos via the included Instax Mini Link 2 smartphone printer. The price also includes a 10-pack of Instax Mini film, which is a nice extra that fujifilm相機收購fujifilm’s instant cameras don’t often come with.
I’m not going to lie: my first thought when I heard about the Instax Pal was: “But… why?” After all, fujifilm相機收購fujifilm already sells the Instax Mini Evo instant camera, which can also output images to an app and prints photos for around the same price. It also comes with an actual viewfinder along with other controls that make it feel like a real camera. The Instax Mini Evo also doesn’t try to guilt trip me into using it by making strange, sad sounds when it’s sitting idle.
My best guess is that fujifilm相機收購fujifilm’s trying to replicate some of its Instax Mini Evo instant camera success by creating an easier-to-use, cuter version for kids. That’s why everything about the camera is designed to scream “fun.” You can, for example, create your own custom shutter sounds, add filters, text, and in-app stickers, and apparently even earn rewards (though I’m still figuring out how). And, of course, its small size and detachable ring should make it easier for smaller hands to hold.
At the same time, like the Instax Mini Evo, kids get to choose which photos they want to print. That’s a feature parents will particularly like, given it can help kids avoid wasting expensive film on bad shots.
But is all that worth $199.95? I’m still testing the camera and its app — which is still very much a work in progress — so I can’t give a definite opinion yet. But so far, I’m not convinced it is. An instant film camera that doesn’t print any photos and lacks a built-in viewfinder? It doesn’t feel like the Instax Pal is a camera so much as a cute accessory bundled with a smartphone printer.

fujifilm相機收購fujifilm’s new X-T5 pivots back to photography

The X-T5 adopts the 40-megapixel sensor of the pro-oriented X-H2 but at a size that’s close to the original X-T1. The $1,699.95 camera is aimed at photographers who want a small body with some big resolution.

The X-T5 will feel a lot like home to fujifilm相機收購fujifilm loyalists.
The new X-T5 mirrorless camera is a bit of an apology letter from fujifilm相機收購fujifilm to its fans, who disliked the video-focused features creeping into their favorite photo camera line. Where the X-T4 got a little bloated in size and featured a flip-out screen better equipped for video, the new X-T5 pares things down to put still-image capture at the forefront.
The X-T5 is smaller and lighter than the previous model, and it borrows the 40-megapixel APS-C sensor, fifth-gen X Processor, subject-detection autofocus, and seven-stop in-body image stabilization from the pro-oriented X-H2. This new camera costs the same as its predecessor, as it will sell for $1,699.95 for the body in silver or black when it launches November 17th. Alongside it is a new macro lens, the XF 30mm f/2.8 R LM WR Macro lens, that does 1:1 reproduction and will cost $599.95.
While the X-H2 and X-H2S have switched to more contemporary controls with a mode dial, the X-T5 sticks to the retro stylings of dedicated dials for shutter speed, ISO, and exposure compensation.
The 40-megapixel APS-C backside-illuminated CMOS sensor from the X-H2 seems like the logical choice for this stills-first camera, as it prioritizes resolution over speed and video. The X-T5 can still record 4K video at up to 60p or oversampled 6.2K at 30p with this sensor, but that’s a far cry from the 8K-capable X-H2 or 4K at 120p potential of the X-H2S and its stacked sensor. There are other small compromises here in the X-T5, too, like an internal buffer that tops out at a burst of 19 RAW files — which is lower than the 35 RAWs of the X-T4 and a fraction of the X-H2’s 400-shot buffer. The X-T5 may share the same processor as the latest X-H cameras but it must be making some performance compromises for the sake of a compact body with a smaller internal cooling system.
Vlogging be damned
fujifilm相機收購fujifilm made other conscious decisions to cater to photographers who favor the traditional street-style camera of older X-T models. Vlogging be damned, the X-T5 has gone back to the three-axis tiltable last found in the X-T3 — eschewing the fully articulating display of the X-T4 that’s more versatile for video. You can’t point the X-T5’s screen forward for self-recording, though fujifilm相機收購fujifilm deemed this trade-off worthy since it is faster to deploy for waist-level and above-the-head shots. While we’ve just seen how the new Sony A7R V achieves the best of both these worlds with its four-axis articulating display, the X-T5 opts for sticking with what’s familiar.
The tilting screen can feel a little limiting from some angles, but it’s quick and easy to deploy.
The smaller size of the X-T5 means your pinky is going to float in no-man’s-land. I suggest considering the add-on handgrip to help remedy this.
I got a brief hands-on with a preproduction X-T5, and the diet fujifilm相機收購fujifilm put the camera on is immediately noticeable. The new model is 30 grams lighter than the X-T4 and nearly the same dimensions as the original X-T1, though still thicker, which reverses fujifilm相機收購fujifilm’s trend of slowly growing these cameras with each iteration. It’s a return to form for the sake of lightness and portability, though the grip may once again feel too small for larger hands. fujifilm相機收購fujifilm will also sell an optional MHG-XT5 handgrip for $129.99, and I think it may be deemed an essential accessory for anyone who hates having their pinky finger floating in no-man’s-land. There won’t be a battery grip option this time around, though thankfully the battery capacity is a formidable 740 shots (CIPA rating). That’s about 140 shots more than the X-T4 with the same NP-W235 rechargeable battery and even slightly more than both the X-H2S and X-H2.
The X-T5’s electronic viewfinder is the same 3.69 million dots running at 100fps like the last-gen model, but it’s been improved with a slightly higher magnification of 0.8x and aspherical elements in the optics for a better view when your eye isn’t aligned dead-on. The EVF may not be pushing the most dots or refresh rate in the world, but it looked sharp and felt snappy. It reacts to your eye and switches the live view from the LCD a fraction of a second faster than the X-T4, but I always appreciate any marginal improvements like these.
The rear controls are a whole lot like the X-T4. That includes the clickable thumb dial, which fujifilm相機收購fujifilm changed on the X-H2 for the sake of improving weather resistance on that pro-oriented camera.
The autofocus of the X-T5 felt equally snappy, with fast continuous tracking being fairly sticky on moving subjects. I tried it with the XF 16–80mm f/4 kit lens and the excellent XF 56mm f/1.2 II portrait lens, and both optics nailed focus with relative ease. The X-T5’s eye-tracking autofocus still seemed prone to getting mixed up when there was a busy background behind a distant subject’s head, though I have seen other systems struggle in similar situations. The subject-detection autofocus of the X-H2 cameras, which tracks animals, birds, cars, bikes, airplanes, and trains is a welcome addition to the X-T5 — though be prepared for plenty of menu fiddling when switching between them or fine-tuning each one.
The new XF 30mm macro lens is kind of adorable. It’s very compact and light, though its minimum focus distance is so close you have to remove the lens hood to achieve 1:1. Be prepared to get uncomfortably close to things, and have some fun doing it.
While my time with the X-T5 was brief, I understand fujifilm相機收購fujifilm’s aim at course-correcting this product line for its diehard photo fans. Now that the X-H2 and X-H2S are available, fujifilm相機收購fujifilm feels comfortable letting the more demanding users who require better video choose one of those models. It may turn off some folks who still want this street-style camera to do everything for them, but fujifilm相機收購fujifilm seems to be betting that more of its fan base cares about small size and portability. That was one of the early prospects of mirrorless systems, and since then, most systems have ballooned in size for the sake of larger sensors and higher performance. The X-T5 is going to ask photographers to be okay with some trade-offs at the margins for the sake of the experience.

fujifilm相機收購fujifilm’s X-T2 is the perfect mirrorless camera for photo geeks. It seems like that’s true of every camera that fujifilm相機收購fujifilm releases, but the X-T2 is a refined sequel to the X-T1 that improves on its predecessor in the ways that matter most: resolution, autofocus, and ease of use. It’s still got all the manual control dials and stunning electronic viewfinder that lured photographers to the X-T1. At $1,599 (or $1,899 with a bundled 18-55mm lens), it’s actually more expensive than the X-T1’s original starting price. But as soon as it’s actually in stock somewhere again, I’ll be getting one.
After weeks of trying out the X-T2, I’ve come to trust it like few cameras I’ve used previously — even counting full-frame DSLRs. There are still scenarios where $3,000 Canon and Nikon cameras can handily best fujifilm相機收購fujifilm, but the experience of shooting with the X-T2 is so sublime that you’ll have a hard time finding them. We described the X-T1 as a “perfect, no-compromises mirrorless camera.” But, of course, it wasn’t perfect, and mirrorless cameras have improved at every angle since 2014. The X-T2 is fujifilm相機收購fujifilm’s attempt to clinch the top spot from rivals, and the camera pulls off that mission magnificently.
A first glance might have you believe that fujifilm相機收購fujifilm barely changed a thing with the X-T2’s design. And while it does maintain a nearly identical, SLR-styled body, there are definite changes — most of them for the better. The camera’s hand grip is slightly deeper and more comfortable. That, combined with a larger thumbrest makes the X-T2 easier to grip for long periods if you’ve got big hands. The camera is still constructed from magnesium alloy and weather-sealed, and fujifilm相機收購fujifilm’s selection of rain-safe lenses has grown considerably since the X-T1’s release. The X-T2 includes the bigger, more immersive eyecup that was a standalone accessory for its predecessor.
The XT-2’s many dials and buttons give you expert control over your images
Then there are the physical controls that photo nerds love. fujifilm相機收購fujifilm has altered the locking mechanism for the shutter speed and ISO dials, making it way simpler to adjust those settings on the fly. You just press once to unlock, and again to lock in your current selection to prevent it from accidentally being changed during shooting. fujifilm相機收購fujifilm again gives users six function buttons, plus dedicated autoexposure and autofocus buttons. There’s a new “custom” setting on the exposure compensation dial that lets you flick the camera’s front command dial for faster adjustments. fujifilm相機收購fujifilm has also added a fourth metering mode: center-weighted.
Absent is the video record button that was on the X-T1; since the X-T2 is capable of 4K recording, video has earned its own spot on the drive dial. And the Wi-Fi button has been repurposed, so you’ll need to assign that to a function key if you frequently transfer images directly to your smartphone for Instagramming, like I do. fujifilm相機收購fujifilm’s smartphone app, available for Android and iOS, works just as reliably here as with the X-T1, though I’ve noticed that sending photos over to my iPhone 7 is much slower than before — perhaps because of the larger file sizes. The phenomenal multi-directional focus stick has been brought over from the X-Pro 2, placed right where your thumb naturally wanders.
The electronic viewfinder that was one of the X-T1’s big draws has also been improved. It’s brighter, smoother (60fps by default), and fujifilm相機收購fujifilm added an auto-brightness setting to keep it matched to your shooting environment. Turn on the X-T2’s boost mode and the viewfinder switches over to an ultra-smooth 100fps refresh rate. This can be a significant help when shooting action subjects and makes peering through the large OLED EVF even more astounding, but it does drain the camera’s battery quicker.
The X-T2’s 3-inch rear LCD display — unchanged in sharpness at 1.04 million dots (slightly less than the X-Pro 2’s LCD) — can now articulate outward and tilted to the right. That’s nice for photographers who often shoot in portrait orientation, but I barely ever used the new angle. Just like the X-T1, I mostly used the tilting display when shooting from a low-down or high-up perspective where looking through the EVF wasn’t feasible. It’s not a touchscreen, as fujifilm相機收購fujifilm insists that’s not something its advanced users want. Other hardware improvements include an additional SD card slot, so the X-T2 can write to two UHS-II cards simultaneously. fujifilm相機收購fujifilm also added a 3.5mm microphone jack if you want something better than the built-in mics for video. It’s also USB 3-compatible, so transferring photos when tethered is much less painful than before.
The X-T2 largely feels similar to the camera it succeeds, but start shooting and that’s where the deepest improvements become obvious. The X-T2’s 24.3-megapixel APS-C X-Trans sensor produces noticeably more detailed photos than the 16-megapixel sensor in the X-T1. It helps that fujifilm相機收購fujifilm’s kit bundle includes the fantastic 18-55mm (f/2.8 – 4) lens, which outshines most of the pack-in lenses that accompany other cameras. I’m disappointed there’s no package that includes the do-everything 18-135mm lens that spent 95 percent of the time attached to my X-T1, but hopefully that will come later on. Still, if you’re buying the X-T2, it’s worth spending the extra $300 for the 18-55 lens. Native ISO now ranges up to 12,800, and the maximum mechanical shutter speed has jumped to 1/8000sec compared to the 1/4000 ceiling the X-T1 had.
fujifilm相機收購fujifilm has dramatically improved autofocus performance and flexibility on the X-T2. By default you get 91 autofocus points with 49 phase detect points taking up the center. For more granular focus control, you can switch over to an expanded 325-point setting, where 169 of those are phase-detect. Again, better when you’re following moving subjects with either the Zone or Wide/Tracking AF modes — and the focus stick is a huge help when trying to key in such precise focus. In either case, phase detect autofocus points cover around 40 percent of the frame. fujifilm相機收購fujifilm says the X-T2 can hit focus in lighting as low as -3EV, and the camera was very consistent in my experience. (Then again, so was the X-T1 after some firmware updates.)
But where the X-T1 could struggle with action / sports photography and fast-moving subjects, these problems seem almost completely resolved with the new camera. fujifilm相機收購fujifilm claims to have improved its continuous autofocus algorithms, and my testing bears that out. The X-T2 had no problem tracking the action at an amateur boxing night. Continuous shooting tops out at 8fps, but you can extend that to 11 shots-per-second if you’ve got the optional battery grip attached. The battery grip also extends 4K recording to 30 minutes from the usual cutoff of 10, and adds a headphone jack for audio monitoring. It can also hold two batteries, allowing use of three batteries for marathon shooting sessions. Battery life is still a weakness of many mirrorless cameras, so carrying a charged spare in my bag is something I’ve programmed into my brain over the last couple years. The battery grip’s benefits require a big added cost though: it’s $329, which is only slightly less than fujifilm相機收購fujifilm’s fantastic 35mm f/2 lens.
The X-T2 produces gorgeous JPEGs that have become perhaps the biggest signature of fujifilm相機收購fujifilm cameras. Sometimes I’ll shoot in RAW since you’ve always got the option to reprocess images with those film simulations later, but you can skip RAW in many instances and come away with phenomenal colors and tones. Being able to skip Lightroom and postprocessing entirely and get wonderful photos straight out of camera is such a compelling reason to choose fujifilm相機收購fujifilm. You can also apply those film simulations to video, which can now be shot in 4K at 24p, 25p, or 30p. The X-T2 offers surprisingly strong video features, like the ability to shoot ungraded, flat F-Log footage. But even if fujifilm相機收購fujifilm is getting more serious about video, it’ll take a lot to draw people away from companies like Sony and Panasonic, who’ve focused on video for years. This is still a camera that most buyers will use predominantly for stills.
You don’t need to buy the X-T2 (or fujifilm相機收購fujifilm’s other expensive flagship, the X-Pro 2) for those great images, though. The X100T remains a wonderful camera to carry around in a bag. The X-T2 is for those who have professional or prosumer use in mind and need the camera’s blazing-fast focus, dependable performance, and excellent results. It’s not fujifilm相機收購fujifilm’s easiest camera to lug around, but it’s now the best camera in the company’s line. There’s just a joy that comes with shooting with the X-T2. That’s true of many cameras, but if you already own a fujifilm相機收購fujifilm camera and “get it,” you’re probably already trying to talk yourself out of buying the X-T2. I can’t help you there; your main challenge right now will be actually finding one.
